Alice Waese’s Book of Drawings coming soon……

LONDON, OCTOBER 2011.

ALICE WAESE is an artist, trained in both fine art and garment design. Her work crosses disciplines, from drawing, to jewelry making, to sculpture and leather work. This interdisciplinary material focused practice and tactile approach has lead to the publication of her first book ‘THOSE THAT ARE, A Compendium of Drawings’.

Waese uses watercolor and ink to produce works on paper. The drawings depict situations, fantastical yet familiar worlds and moments are conveyed. Each piece composed of tiny black dots and washed out watercolor systems seemingly borrowed from some made up creatures’ anatomy. Conceptual and material, inspired by natural forms and patterning the drawings are an ongoing practice. A narrative, each work telling a story, inspiring, and further developing the last.

The book reflects Waese’s practice and varied skills. Her handmade approach can be seen in the Risograph printing process, as well as the very structure of the book, not only a compilation of drawings, but also a secret jewelry box. After the 30th and final drawing, a golden or silver tooth on a chain sits in a small dye cut in the back of the book. As if pulled out of one of the drawings mouths, a tactile reality grounds the imaginative whimsy of the drawings, and pulls together a theme, eerie, beautiful and delicately disturbing at the same time.

Each book is printed in London at Ditto Press and published by the Dean Street Atelier, ranging in price from £500.00 to £1000.00 depending on the precious metal of the tooth. Currently carried at Hostem in London, Zero in NYC and available for purchase through the publisher.
